Web Site Statistics for June 2006
You love me, you really love me!
No really, you do. Well actually you love WordPress and Godaddy, at least that is what my AWStats is telling me.
In the month of may “WordPress Godaddy” was the most popular search phrase that lead you to either the How to setup WordPress MySQL and Permalinks info on Godaddy Hosting or the WordPress, Godaddy, and Permalinks posts here on the idano.net web site.
Web Site Statistics for April 2006
The idano.net web site went “official” with my initial post on March 24th. I got a whole 50 unique visits that month.
Well in the month of April things were a whole lot different.
According to AWStats on my web server the idano.net web site received 606 unique visitors and 1122 total visits. Pretty cool!
Well how did we get so many visits here?
I believe that it was due to 2 things.
The first was interesting content – my most popular post was WordPress Desktop Client Search.
The second was that I got the word out. Not only did I post on WordPress desktop clients, I added relevant tags to Technorati, then, I read other people’s similar posts and commented of their sites. I believe that if you want visits to your site you need to visit other people’s sites (and comment too).
I wanted to thank all of you who have stopped by, read, and commented. Hopefully the information that you have read here as been useful to you.
More good stuff to come in May!
Google is Weird
The more I research and see the results first hand, I am convinced – Google is weird.
Today I checked, again, to see if my newer pages (or any pages knowing Google) are showing up. Well now, the old index.asp pages are now showing up in Google results even though the do not exist. Also, the newer 20+ pages of this site are no where to be seen.
Even weirder is that I have a Google site map that is automatically updated every time I post. The plug-in I use even pings Google to let them know there is a change, but they do not follow it.
I guess these are just the perils of revamping your entire web site (rant over).
Further tests to fix Techorati ping issue
As you may have noticed in my last few posts, I have been having issue with my post showing up in Technorati correctly. This post is to try and see if a change that just made is going to work.
I will post my findings of what caused this when available.
Trouble with Technorati Links
I am putting this post up just to reference my last few post because they have not been listing correctly on Technorati.
Here are the posts -
- WordPress, Godaddy, and Permalinks – Where I talk about what you need to do to get permalinks working on Godaddy.
- How to setup WordPress MySQL and Permalinks info on Godaddy Hosting – This one is pretty self explanatory
The reason why this is an issue is that I actually get a lot of traffic from Technorati and I have see the difference in the last day or so because of this issue.
How to setup WordPress MySQL and Permalinks info on Godaddy Hosting
I am posting a followup to yesterday’s post – WordPress, Godaddy, and Permalinks in which I spoke of what you need to enable permalinks on Godaddy hosting.
From that post I got an email asking about how to setup the wp-config.php file with the correct MySQL info.
Here are my notes about how to get it setup -
WordPress, Godaddy, and Permalinks
UPDATED 4/29/2009 – My original conclusion about Permalinks not working with Godaddy hosting has a new conclusion. Zac Vineyard noted below that it can take up to an hour to update the .htaccess file on the server so that the Permalinks work. I have personally confirmed that this does indeed work. Thanks Zac!
ORIGINAL POST:
I thought I would be helpful and post my recent research results in getting WordPress setup on a Godaddy hosting account. I did searches on Google and Technorati and nobody had a definitive answer.
The problem that I had was trying to setup permalinks for WordPress. Even though I had setup the .htaccess file and given it write permissions the permalinks would just go to Godaddy’s 404 page. The links did work with the standard setup.
So here’s the low down. There are 3 different levels of Godaddy Linux hosting accounts. They are -
- Economy
- Deluxe
- Premium
The economy level of hosting does not give you access to mod-rewrite. Deluxe does. So you if permalinks are not working you need to call up Godaddy and upgrade your account.
Round Rock Web Design Blog # 6 on Google
I did a quick check this morning on Google for the Phrase “Round Rock Web Design” and low and behold – the blog I setup on wordpress.com is # 6 in Google results.
The coolest thing about it is that I did not put quotes “” around the phrase so I was not looking for the exact term.
I originally setup the blog just to generate some inbound links to the real Round Rock Web Design web site and only had 2 posts on it.
Now it would be nice if the actual Round Rock Web Design web site showed up instead, but I am content with anything being there at this point as long as it is pointing to the real site.
I will be posting more on that blog and a few others I have to hopefully push that up to the top!
WordPress Permalink Post Names for SEO
In my post “themastersfamily.net – Page Rank 4” – I mentioned that I had changed the permalink structure for SEO purposes to the following -
websitename.com/postname-postid.htm
I did this based on the theory that Google puts more emphasis of pages from the root of the site then a page in a sub-folder like this -
websitename.com/category/postname/
Well another thing that I know, but had not put 2 and 2 together on, was that although I had this structure and was putting keywords in the title so that page would be named with the keywords, the website names that I was referring to where getting smashed together and where unreadable to search engines.
