Test Post from Adobe Contribute on Mac

Posted on April 2, 2007

I was recently editing a page in Dreamweaver 8 and discover a cool little function in it. The function allowed you to resize an image in the page and then resample so that the original image became the same size as the resized image. I thought to myself that this would be really cool when doing a blog post. Windows Live Writer does this but I am still on the hunt for a Mac equivalent.

Enter Adobe Contribute.

Adobe is in between versions right now and is supposed to be releasing the CS3 version in about a month. With a little digging I was able to download Contribute version 4 to try out. Another item to mention is that Contribute is expensive @ $150, especially when other desktop blog editors are free. I am trying it out because I am planning on upgrading to the CS3 web suite and Contribute is a part of it so in essence I would not paying for it (on it’s own anyway).

Test Post From Qumana Bog Editor – Mac

Posted on March 29, 2007

My SonI had reviewed Qumana quite some time ago on Windows and wasn’t quite impressed because of some bugs that I experienced at the time. Since I have been jonesing for Windows Live Writer lately I thought that I would give Qumana a shot on the MacBook.

I have to say that the initial experience has been more of a positive one them I remember. Qumana downloaded quickly and after the unzip I dropped in my applications folder. From there opening Qumana prompted me to enter my blog info which automatically detected my WordPress blog and downloaded my most recent posts.

From there I started this post. The first thing I noticed was their "Posted by Quamana" message in the bottom right hand corner. A quick trip to the preferences window allowed me to remove that. While I was there I noticed a check box to check spelling inline – nice – I activated it.

Next, the image test – the best that I have come across so far for Mac. Qumana allowed me to browse to an image, resize it, upload, and apply spacing to it – all without having to go to the HTML source. Also, once you have done al of this if you do not like the size of the photo you can right click on it and edit all of the same items – double nice!

Great job Qumana!

I am totally stoked. I have now officially found a Blog Desktop Editor that works really well in Mac. I will have to retest it in Windows to see if it works as well there.

A Week Later Using the MacBook

Posted on March 29, 2007

MacBook MemoryWell about a week has gone by and I have been using the MacBook on and off. The two issues that I had stated last week have pretty much been resolved.

The first was the right click controversy. This was resolved by a newer option in OS X that allows you to place 2 fingers at the same time and click to bring up the right click menu. Simple enough. After a few hours it was second nature to do this to open up pages in separate tabs in Firefox.

The second issue was the lack of a true “Delete” key. I just figured out today that holding down the function key while hitting the “Delete” key (backspace) gives you a true delete experience. I am starting to learn that the Function, Control, Option, and Mac buttons have a lot of functions. Read the rest of this entry »

Blogging From a MacBook

Posted on March 21, 2007

MacBookCall me a hypocrite – go ahead. But right now I am writing this post from a brand new MacBook. I have come a long from my post – I am not going to buy a Mac – back in April of last year.

Why the change of heart?

I would like to say that I have seen the light and switched, but… the real reason is that the company that I work for is going cross-browser on the software that they develop. That means that my team and I need to make sure that what we do looks good and works properly in Safari. The only way to do that is – you guessed it – to purchase Macs. Right now we only have one for our team but I think that may change in the future.

What do I think so far? Read the rest of this entry »

After a Week of Vista – I’m Switching Back

Posted on February 12, 2007

I was pumped. I was excited. I went out and bought a new TV tuner card to take advantage of the Media Center in Vista. After a week of researching out why the video was poor quality, why it would not play AVI files that I made in XP, and discovering that it would not install my Adobe Acrobat.

My Configuration

I have a Hauppauge WinTV To Go + TV Tuner card. This card comes with it’s of TV software and gives you ability to record programs. It works great. What it doesn’t do is work in Vista. It is recognized but there is no Audio driver (should be out soon) but even when it comes out even though Vista will recognize it the Media Center in Vista won’t. So I bought one that Vista would like at the tune of $120 at Fry’s.

I am not going to buy a Mac

Posted on April 14, 2006

NOTE: This post was written back in early 2006 and I still gets a lot of traffic to it. Since that time I have purchased a Mac and am very happy with my decision. The points that I bring up in this post about the hardware to hardware comparisons is true but my experience with comparing OS X to Vista or XP makes the difference.

From my experience OS X does much more with lower performing hardware then Microsoft is capable of. My Dell Dimension has been completely replaced by a Mac Mini EXCEPT for the gaming aspect. For gaming you need to consider an iMac or better. In reference to security, I do not even run virus software on my Mac and if you do any research the general consensus is that it is not needed for Macs.

Finally, my conclusion on Macs being a “status symbol” is no longer a valid point. That is not what pushed me to buy the Mac. My bad experience with Windows Vista got me looking. I do think Macs are better quality as a whole but I also believe Macs are a little more main stream now then they were back in early 2006.

Anyway, on to the original article…

I have been wanting to jump on the Mac band wagon for a while. I was even excited when Apple announced that I could run Windows on a Mac (see my post here). I thought in my mind “Wow, I can finally have a Mac, and I won’t be ‘missing out’ any longer”.

There was even this guy at Make Me Switch who was asking for people to donate so he could have a nice new iMac. I donated $10 to the guy because yes, everyone should have a nice new Mac in their house.

So I started to formulate my plan to retire my perfectly good 1 year old Dell which has not given me any problems. I was going make it into a media center to play videos because after all “it was just a lowly PC’. I even went to the apple.com web site to decide which Mac I was going to get when I could afford it.

Windows on a Mac

Posted on April 5, 2006

Well it has finally happened, You can easily run Windows XP on an Intel based Mac.

Apple has released a new software package called Boot Camp. The software has a pretty simple wizard that burns all the drivers that you need for Windows XP on a disk and then sets up a “partition” for the Windows installation. Then when you boot your machine Mac up, hold down the CTRL Mac key to get a boot menu – Windows or Mac OS. Pretty slick. I guess Apple figures that if you can’t beat em’ join em’.

This is good news for me because I have been wanting a Mac for a while but really could not justify the higher price and the need for a new computer (my dell desktop is only 1 year old). Also, all the software that I have is for Windows and purchasing all the same software for Mac does not make sense.

But now I can have the best of both worlds. Read the rest of this entry »
