Sometimes You Shoot Yourself in the Foot and Don’t Realize It Until Later (Affiliate Marketing)

Posted on November 30, 2007

doh I have been having a phenomenal month with Amazon.com due to a couple of RC Helicopter Reviews that I did for Air Hogs Havoc Heli and Air Hogs Laser Battle. I have search engine results for both and current have over a 20% conversion rate for people who click through to Amazon.

There was another helicopter that I reviewed called the Air Hogs Reflex . My review of this helicopter was not as positive as the other two reviews. On top of that I did not place a link to the Reflex on Amazon but instead to the Havoc. I did this because at the time I thought the Havoc was better then the Reflex.

Since the review I got my hands on some other heli’s and also another Reflex. I was pleasantly surprised with the Reflex and it was much better then I remembered it was. The problem was that I never updated my review with my newly acquired experience.

Today I logged into my Google Analytics account and noticed that my Reflex review was number 3 after the other 2 heli reviews. The Reflex review was pulling in over 10% of the traffic that my site was getting but I was getting zero sales from it :-( . I had been sitting on my more positive view of the product for a couple of months and now realized that I was paying the price for it.

Needless to say I quickly updated my review and provided the appropriate links for BOTH helicopters mentioned in the review. I may have missed a chunk or change for this month but hopefully December is just as good for me.

There’s the Reflex on Amazon to the right if you want to check it out.

iPhone + Google Reader + Digg – Playing Together Better Today

Posted on October 3, 2007

Well Google Reader, Digg, and the iPhone seem to be getting along better today. Then links to the original articles have re-appeared when clicking on a digg article from Google Reader.

I am still getting the “Bad Request” error in Google Reader when trying to mark things as read. Due this I only try once a day to mark items as read. If it doesn’t work the one time then I don’t try again.

Hopefully someday Google will fix it.

iPhone + Google Reader + Digg are Not Playing Well Together

Posted on October 2, 2007

I have been using Google Reader on my iPhone since almost the first day that I got my iPhone. It has worked great up until a few days ago when people started talking about it getting “updated” for the iPhone.

Since the “update” I get continual “Bad Reqest” errors when trying to mark all posts on a page as read. If that wasn’t bad enough as yesterday any post that I click on for digg does not have the link to the actual article but the comments only. If I try to use digg’s iPhone version the sites that they are linking to often load too slow (over Edge) to be of any use. Due to this I diggless at this point which sucks.

Oh well, maybe going without digg for a few days is actually a good thing ;-) .

Outlook Webmail Sucks Compared to Gmail

Posted on April 11, 2007

Exchange WebmailMy company just ‘upgraded’ from Exchange 5.5 to 2007 which includes an upgrade to it’s webmail feature. Version 5.5 as you may guess was so 90′s so I was expecting the 2007 version to be much better.

It sucks just as bad.

The first thing is that there is no search. We live in the age of search and I cannot search for an email. The second thing is that the calendar looks just awful and is difficult to use.

See I am used to using Gmail and Google Calendar. Both of these application flow so that you can find and create items quickly. It is sad when a free item trumps one that you pay thousands of dollars for.

Oh, and before you jump on the “Google is not secure” bandwagon – stop and think for a moment – who makes Exchange? Microsoft, that’s right.

You want to rethink that statement now?

Rant over.

Zookoda – Blog Email Subscriptions Done Right

Posted on February 21, 2007

I do not if anyone noticed but I recently removed the email subscription box in my sidebar. The reason for it was that it felt a little dated and I am pretty sure most people were subscribing to my feed as opposed to wanting email updates. I pretty much thought that the idea of email notifications for a blog was an old one.

But then I came across Zookoda blog email service. It is similar in that you signup to receive post notifications but that is where the similarities end. With Zookoda you get to control what content and how much of it is sent and how often. You also get analytics to see how your subscriptions are doing.

The best part about it is that it is free.

Companies and Slow Releases

Posted on December 6, 2006

Protopage just released their V3 of their customer start page.

I started using Protopage as my start page near the beginning of the year as it was nice to have all me RSS feeds and links that I use daily all in one place. I would check their blog on a pretty regular basis and it seemed that things where going just fine.

Then after about 3 months I noticed that they had not posted to their blog in a while. The last post that they had done was talking about the promise of a version 3 coming out. Mean time I had noticed that a couple of other companies who had a similar service where beginning to fold (actually fold.com was one of the companies that folded – go figure). Good Resource for Starting a Web Hosting Company

Posted on October 30, 2006

I have a reseller account that I use for the couple of customers that I have design sites for over the years. It makes me enough money to buy some toys throughout the year and I also get to host as many of my personal sites as I want for free.

I have be tempted to to open my account up so that other could sign up but not have been sure on what it takes to get it going. Today while browsing around I found Reseller Hosting Guide which is a site that is dedicated to helping you start a web hosting company. Read the rest of this entry »

WordPress.com is Slowly Coming Back Up

Posted on October 30, 2006

Still no word about what happened but WordPress.com looks as though it is slowly coming back online although it is running pretty slow.

I can now get into my dashboard and see the front page of my blog.

Hope they fix whatever is causing this soon.

WordPress.com is Down

Posted on October 30, 2006

Wow, I went to post something on one of my WordPress.com blogs and my site did not come up. I thought at first that maybe my site got pulled but then I tried my other site – no dice.

I then tried the just wordpress.com and the same message -

503 Service Unavailable

Whoops!

We just got a “503 error”. Please try refreshing the page and if the error is still there drop us a note and let us know.

This is a very big deal especially after WordPress.com started offering to have domain mapping.

I hope they get it up soon.
